Information loss in a single register:

The smallest memory unit is a one bit register. Two states („0" or „1", RED or GREEN) can be stored. The image shows a register with GREEN information, which can be read on the output. If a heavy ion (orange ball) destroys this information, i.e. changes it to RED, the output delivers false information, until the information of the register is restored to GREEN.
